여는 기도

성도들에게 베푸시는 하나님의 영광스러운 상속이, 얼마나 풍성한지를 알게 하소서.

 

8 그런데 전에는 여러분이 하나님을 알지 못해서, 본디 하나님이 아닌 것들에게 종노릇을 하였지만,

9 지금은, 여러분이 하나님을 알 뿐만 아니라, 하나님께서 여러분을 알아주셨습니다. 그런데 어찌하여 그 무력하고 천하고 유치한 교훈으로 되돌아가서, 또다시 그것들에게 종노릇 하려고 합니까?

10 여러분이 날과 달과 계절과 해를 지키고 있으니,

11 내가 여러분을 위하여 수고한 것이 헛될까 염려됩니다.

8-9절. 바울은 율법 준수를 갈라디아 교인들의 이전 종교 관행과 동일시하는 충격적 주장을 한다. 이런 주장은 그가 예수 그리스도의 등장으로 이전의 모든 헌신[율법에 대한 헌신이든 이방인의 죄의 가장 무도한 본보기에 대한 헌신이든(2:15)]이 똑같이 효력을 잃었다고 믿기 때문에만 가능하다(IVP 성경비평주석). 

 

[오늘의 묵상]

바울은 갈라디아 교인들의 신앙 양태가 “무력하고 천하고 유치한 교훈”으로 되돌아가는 것처럼 보였다. 

그도 그럴 것이 예수님도 안식일의 주인이 자신이라고 말씀하시면서 유대 율법의 안식일 규정을 새롭게 해석하셨다. 

안식일이 필요없다가 아니라, 안식일의 본질을 다시 설파하신 것이다. 

그 뿐만 아니라, 자신이 진정한 제물이 되셔서 기존 제사 제도의 허점과 약점을 완벽히 보완하셨다. 

제사 제도는 예수님의 십자가 죽음으로 완성되었다. 

기존의 제사 제도는 더는 필요치 않다. 

예수님께 나아오는 자는 하나님에 대한 죄를 사함받고, 하나님과 화목하게 된다. 

마음의 여러 죄책감과 수치감을 극복할 수 있다. 

예수님이 참 제사가 되기 때문이다. 

제사의 종류가 소제, 번제, 속죄제, 속건제, 화목제가 있었는데, 예수님은 그 모든 제사의 의미와 본질을 성취하셨다. 

오직 예수님만으로 우리는 하나님과 화해하고 화목할 수 있다. 

그런데 이 진리가 점점 약해지고 있었다. 

예수님을 믿고 신뢰하고 따르는 것만으로는 부족하다 느낀 사람들이 있었다. 

할례, 안식일, 제사, 절기 제도를 여전히 유지하려는 그리스도인들이 있었다. 

예수님도 그 모든 것을 따랐다고 주장하면서 말이다. 

예수님도 유대인이었으니, 할례도 받으셨고, 안식일도 나름의 방식으로 지키셨으며, 절기 때마다 예루살렘 성전에 올라가셨고, 부모님과 함께 제사를 지냈다고 주장했을 것이다. 

유대인 출신 그리스도인들은 이런 주장에 깊이 공감했을 가능성이 높다. 

인류의 구원자가 유대인으로부터 나왔다고 한다. 

그러니 유대인의 정체성을 유지하는 것은 나쁜 것이 아니라 권장할 만한 일이었다. 

이방인 출신 그리스도인들이라도 결국 유대인화되는 것이 필요하다고 주장했다. 

 

하지만 바울은 단호했다. 

그렇게 뒤로 돌아갈 수 없었다. 

신학적, 역사적 퇴행을 가만 두고 볼 수 없었다. 

분명 예수님을 통해 모든 약속이 성취되었고, 율법의 가장 깊은 본질적 요구를 충족시키셨다. 

더는 율법의 요구를 피상적으로 달성하는 것이 의미가 없어졌다. 

그분과 언약을 맺는 것이 하나님 백성이 되는 유일한 길이었다. 

할례를 통해 하나님의 백성이 되었다는 상징적 표증은 더는 필요없게 되었다. 

굳이 할례를 하겠다면 막을 이유는 없으나, 그것이 구원에 이르는 길, 언약 백성이 되는 유일한 징표라고 주장하는 것은 어불성설이다. 

안식일은 주님과 깊은 관계로 나아가는 날이요, 육체 노동으로부터 자유해 지는 날이다. 

제사는 하나님과의 관계를 회복하고 죄채감을 제거하는 날이다. 

절기는 하나님의 일하심을 기억하고 공동체적으로 기념하는 기간이다. 

이 모든 것은 예수님에게 집약되고 완성된다. 

하나님이신 예수님을 신뢰하고 따르는 것이 할례, 안식일, 제사, 절기의 취지를 달성하며 충족시키고 흘러 넘치게 한다. 

그러니 규정으로 구원의 원천을 가리지 말아야 한다. 

율법으로 율법의 원천을 막지 말아야 한다. 

 

오늘날에도 예수님을 대체하려는 움직임들은 언제나 존재한다. 

심리학, 운동, 부동산, 돈, 동호회, 자기 관리…. 

저마다 나름의 규정이 있고, 나름의 규율이 있다. 

마라토너들의 유툽을 살펴보면 마라톤으로 자신이 어떻게 변화되었는지 간증하는 사람들이 참으로 많다. 

어떻게 훈련해야 하고, 어떤 규율을 따라야 하는지 계속 말해준다. 

자기를 극복하고 자아를 실현하고 행복을 경험할 수 있는 방법이라고 주장한다. 

그들의 말에 대체로 동의한다. 

그러나 그것으로 예수님을 대체할 수는 없다. 

그것으로 우주의 주인이신 하나님과 화목하게 할 수는 없다. 

“무력하고 천하고 유치한 교훈”에 사로잡히지 않고 오직 주님을 신뢰하고 따르는 삶을 추구하라. 

 

[오늘의 기도]

주님, 

오직 주님만이 하나님과의 관계를 개선할 수 있습니다. 

오직 예수님만이 하나님과 화해할 수 있는 유일한 방법입니다. 

예수님을 오늘도 기다립니다. 

주님과 더욱 깊은 관계로 나아가도록 저를 이끄소서. 

 

주님을 대체하려는 인간들의 몸부림을 불쌍히 여기소서. 

모든 것이 저마다 의미를 갖습니다. 

그러나 구원의 원천은 오직 예수님 뿐이십니다. 

이 사실을 더 깊이 몸과 마음에 새기도록 도우소서. 

 

몽골 사역을 마치고 다시 본국으로 귀환하는 주님의 종을 긍휼히 여기소서. 

어디에 있든지 주님의 뜻을 드러내는 사역자가 되게 하소서. 

대학생들에게 복음을 전하려고 할 때, 주님의 지혜가 넘치게 하소서.

[Today’s Word Essay]

Paul seemed to observe a regression in the faith of the Galatian believers, viewing it as a return to "weak and beggarly elements" (Galatians 4:9). Indeed, just as Jesus reinterpreted the Jewish Sabbath regulations by asserting Himself as the Lord of the Sabbath, He reinterpreted the essence of the Sabbath. It wasn't that the Sabbath was unnecessary, but that Jesus unveiled its true significance. Moreover, He became the ultimate sacrifice, flawlessly complementing the shortcomings of the existing sacrificial system. The sacrificial system was perfected through Jesus' death on the cross. The old sacrificial system was no longer needed. Those who come to Jesus receive forgiveness for their sins and are reconciled with God. They can overcome various feelings of guilt and shame in their hearts because Jesus became the true sacrifice. There were various types of sacrifices - grain offerings, burnt offerings, sin offerings, guilt offerings, peace offerings - but Jesus fulfilled the meaning and essence of all these sacrifices. Only through Jesus can we be reconciled with God and find peace. However, this truth was gradually weakening. Some felt that believing in and following Jesus was not enough. There were Christians who still sought to maintain circumcision, the Sabbath, sacrifices, and festivals. They might argue that Jesus Himself followed all these things. Since Jesus was also a Jew, He probably received circumcision, observed the Sabbath in His own way, went up to the Jerusalem temple for festivals, and celebrated the feasts with His parents. Jewish Christians were likely to deeply sympathize with such claims. It is said that the Savior of humanity came from the Jews. So maintaining Jewish identity was not a bad thing, but rather something to be encouraged. Even Gentile Christians ultimately needed to be Judaized. 

 

However, Paul was firm. It was impossible to go back like that. He could not ignore theological and historical regression. Clearly, all the promises had been fulfilled through Jesus, and He had fulfilled the deepest demands of the law. It became meaningless to superficially fulfill the demands of the law. Making a covenant with Him was the only way to become God's people. The symbolic sign of becoming God's people through circumcision was no longer necessary. If someone wanted to be circumcised, there was no reason to stop them, but it was an absurdity to claim that it was the only way to salvation, the only sign of becoming a covenant people. The Sabbath is a day of moving closer to the Lord and a day of freedom from physical labor. Sacrifice is a day of restoring a relationship with God and removing feelings of guilt. Festivals are periods of remembering God's work and commemorating it collectively. All of this is summed up and completed in Jesus. Trusting and following Jesus accomplishes and fulfills the purpose of circumcision, the Sabbath, sacrifices, and festivals, overflowing abundantly. Therefore, we should not block the source of salvation with regulations. We should not block the source of the law with the law. 

 

Today, there are always movements trying to replace Jesus. Psychology, exercise, real estate, money, clubs, self-management... Each has its own regulations and discipline. Looking at marathoners' YouTube channels, there are many who testify to how they have been changed by marathons. They continue to talk about how to train and what rules to follow. They claim it's the way to overcome themselves, realize their selves, and experience happiness. We generally agree with what they say. However, we cannot replace Jesus with that. We cannot reconcile with God, the Lord of the universe, through that. Pursue a life of trusting and following only the Lord without being captivated by "weak and beggarly elements”.

 

[Today’s Prayer]

"Lord,

Only You, Lord, can improve our relationship with God.

Only Jesus is the sole way to reconcile with God.

I await Jesus today as well.

Guide me to deepen my relationship with You, Lord.

 

Have pity on the struggles of humans trying to replace You, Lord.

Everything has its own significance.

But the source of salvation is solely Jesus.

Help me engrave this truth deeper into my body and soul.

 

Have mercy on Your servant, who is returning from Mongolia to her homeland.

May she become a minister revealing Your will wherever she may be.

When sharing the gospel with college students, overflow them with Your wisdom.

 

I pray in the name of Jesus.
